Shafaq
Scroll to dusk
Twenty-four keys

Built low into the dunes, so the only thing taller than the retreat is the mountain behind it.
Shafaq sits in a wadi where the red sand of Ras Al Khaimah meets the first ridges of the Hajar. Rammed-earth walls, palm-frond shade and stone from the hills keep the rooms cool by day. At dusk the whole place turns to face the glow that gave it its name.
Six ways
to stay.
Dune rooms, courtyard rooms, suites with their own pool and a house for eight. Every one opens onto sand, palms or the mountain.
A day at Shafaq
From first light
to the last glow.
05:40
Dawn
First light on the dunes
A guide walks you to the crest before the sun clears the ridge. Coffee is poured on the sand.

08:30
Morning
Breakfast under the palms
Dates from the grove, labneh, flatbread from the fire and cardamom coffee in the courtyard.
14:00
Afternoon
The slow hours
A plunge pool, a hammam, a book on the daybed. The palm-frond shade moves across the floor.

18:05
Dusk
The hour we are named for
Twenty minutes after sunset the sky over the dunes turns the colour of embers. Everyone stops to watch.
21:00
Night
Fire, then stars
Supper at Jamra, then a telescope on the dune and a sky with nothing in the way.

Days planned
around the light.
Eight ways to spend a day, each at the hour it suits best.

Dining
Jamra,
the ember kitchen.
Everything at dinner touches the fire: lamb from the hills, Gulf fish wrapped in palm leaf, flatbread blistered on hot stone.
The Sand House.
A vaulted hammam lit by small round skylights, and treatments made with dates, clay and herbs from the wadi.
